Photographic identification review

Evidence for this exact frame

Reviewed hypotheses are preserved separately from the current archive label and from iNaturalist computer vision. They record what the photograph supports, what remains plausible, and what the frame cannot resolve.

Conclusion: Chromodoris magnifica

Reviewed by Codex identification research on Aug 28, 2026 · 88% reviewer confidence.

Reasoning recorded at review

  • White to very pale blue finely punctate dorsum with three broad, continuous black longitudinal band systems
  • The median broad black band remains separate from the outer bands anteriorly
  • A broad white outer edge lies beyond the yellow-orange submarginal mantle markings
  • Rhinophores and gills are fully orange
  • The broad black bands and white-orange-white edge combination agree with the specimen-backed Chromodoris magnifica account

Alternatives considered

  • Chromodoris annae

Why plausible: The original iNaturalist computer-vision result was Chromodoris annae at 59.8%, and some Chromodoris lineages mimic one another.

Comparison: The photograph lacks the usual blue, darkly punctate C. annae field and instead shows the complete broad-band and white-orange-white-margin combination associated with C. magnifica.

  • Chromodoris strigata

Why plausible: C. strigata is another pale blue-white, black-lined Chromodoris recorded from the western Pacific and eastern Indonesia.

Comparison: IMG_6811 shows broad continuous black bands and a conspicuous outer white edge, not the relatively narrow or broken five-line pattern, blue-white blurred zones, interrupted yellow outer margin and white gill pinnules described for C. strigata.

Conclusion: Chromodoris magnifica

Reviewed by Codex evidence audit on Aug 27, 2026 · 88% reviewer confidence.

Reasoning recorded at review

  • White to very pale blue finely punctate dorsum with three broad continuous black longitudinal bands
  • Yellow-orange submarginal mantle markings with a narrow white outer edge
  • Rhinophores and gills fully orange

Alternatives considered

  • Chromodoris annae

Why plausible: Original iNaturalist computer-vision suggestion; some Chromodoris colour forms are mimetic or variable

Comparison: C. annae is usually blue and darkly punctate and does not show this complete broad-band, white-orange-white-margin combination
